WebEach determinant of maternal mortality in the modi-fied framework is classed either as intermediate or dis-tant based on its proximity to the outcome. Intermediate determinants (Fig. 1) have a more direct influence on maternal mortality while distant determinants impact the outcome by way of their influence on the intermedi-ate factors.
